CIRCLE OF COMFORT: Getting 2021 Ready

Circle of Comfort… is what we know is safe from change. What we are comfortable in – that area of our life we know and we control. The cup of coffee in the morning, the warm and fuzzy slippers, the beach vacation that has you laying on the beach in a hazy lull of delicious splendor in which you never want to leave.
Comfort. This is life. We tend to get into a rhythm, one that we know and expect.
The older we get the more we tend to stay in our Circle. The years pass, our dreams are shreds of the past, and we go on plugging – wondering “what would have been if…” but we shrug it off with too old, too late. The things that we are comfortable with, the ones that we are used to, are now the standard. No more adventures, no more living “la vida loca,” just day in and day out sameness.

To step outside and move forward you must feel the burn. Like working out after months of hibernation.

I was reminiscing the other day on a leadership program that I participated in several years ago in which I was totally taken out of my Circle of Comfort. I was excited to have been selected from thousands of candidates who were accomplished leaders and being the perpetual student that I am, I got ready with laptop, colored pens, highlighter, and sticky notes. The day arrived and to my surprise the entire event took place in the woods. I was horrified! I am not an accomplished athlete, except, for my occasional Zumba class and workout videos, I tend to stay away from CrossFit and Boot Camp and here I was deep in the woods ready to walk on a plank set high up between trees.

I began to feel such fear and the Saboteur came a calling. What was I to do? I swallowed my fear I didn’t want to be a seen among my peers as a whiner, crybaby, or worse. So, I tapped into my Warrior and walked the plank with ease and grace and got to the other side unscathed. My fear got me out of my Circle I was so wrapped up into making it to the other side that I ignored the saboteur and kept on going. I sucked it up and did it. Afterwards it felt great!

My question to you is…
Are you going to step out of your Circle or will you let the Saboteur suck you back in?

Take for instance a great job opportunity or a new business opportunity that comes your way. You finally get yourself in gear to step into your greatness. A promotion, freedom and flexibility, creative self-expression. What you have longed for has come. Everything is lined up and then, the fear sets in, the worry and you begin to see a pattern – yes, it’s him, Mr. Saboteur. He shows right up. At first you may not notice him. He is subtle, undercover, and subversive. But then you begin to feel a bit on edge, you have taken your first step out of your Circle of Comfort and unconsciously you are pulling yourself back in.
You tell yourself a million reasons why it will not work. You tell yourself a million more of how its best to play it safe. So, you retreat and go back into what you know and feels “right” but you sabotage yourself and hold yourself back from greater things.

But Why?
Look at why you are holding yourself back. Is there a pattern? To do great things we have to start small.
How is your Circle…Are you staying in….or inching out?
